I cannot figure out why knocking damages the spark plug.

I can understand why knocking can damage pistons, gaskets, and cylinder heads due to an early detonation. But why spark plug? The spark plugs are designed to tolerate engine combusion. An early detonation should not generate more than normal temperature or pressure. Just a guess.
