corolla 2002

I have a corolla 2002. This is my first car. Due to the lack of maintainance, the engine is not good right now. We have to replace it with a new one( $4000) to get it work. I am wondering what is the best solution: buy a new one, buy a used one or replace the engine? Could anyone give me any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
