You can shift from Drive to a lower gear as long as you are sure that the rpms in the lower gear will not be to high for the engine, most newer vehicles will not allow the transmission to shift to a lower gear unless it is safe. Shifting from a lower gear to drive is OK to do anytime as long as you are careful not to pass Neutral and put it in reverse.
