Help on buying used cars in US

My friend wants to buy an used Mercede (like S500) in US and to ship back to China. She told me that tax is cheaper for used cars than for new cars.

My questions are:
1. what model and which year will be a good buy for the used Mercede?
2. What is the best way to buy? Checking around local dealer or go online search?
