once you turn on the ignition key, the starter gear will engage the flywheel gear, therefore crank the engine at 200 rpm, if the gear is damaged, strange sounds may appear, there also others things to cause the starter not function, such as low voltage etc, that is my understanding, but if your engine can crank and strange sounds appear, that might be the signs of damaged gear, that is my understanding
