If you have old SUV, truck, minivan, now maybe the time to get a new one. You do not need a hybrid/smart/yaris/... to get federal credit. You only need +2mpg to get 3500, +5mpg to get 4500.

I am not sure if a newly acquired junk car will qualify. If so, you can also sell your junk to somebody who want to new car.
