I think for non-performance cars,
it is safer,
to use dino oil more frequently(3 months or 5k miles)
than to use synthetic once a year.
Oil can last long,
but not the filter or additives in the oil
Maybe I am a little conservertive.

If you live in a very cold place
For sure synthetic is a must.
