4WD means 4 wheels spin at the same speed. AWD's 4 wheels can spin at different speed. AWD is easier to control than 4WD on paved road, but it is harder to get out of a mud trap in field than 4WD in dirt road. That is why you only see AWD cars and 4WD trucks.
