What did they do for the maintenance?

I understand your frustration but I have to tell you, I never had a garage ripped me off in US. It is very possible that your car was making a week noise before you took it to them. At that time, you normally would turn your radio on, and never thought about it. Now after the service you stated paying attention to how your car drives. And started noticing the noise. $1000 sounds a lot of money but if the garage replaced your timing belt, and other stuff, then It is a very good deal. One thing I have learned here is that people are a lot trust worthy than we think. Give them the benifit of doubt unless you have solid proof.
