OK, you should've checked it before you sell your car. After you paid off your loan, the lender should remove the lien and it should be printed on the title. I suggest you to ask your lender or dealer. I am not in CA, so I don't know if you can do it at DMV or not, but you don't have your original title, which is needed to remove lien at DMV.
