Mostly, recalls have no time limit

MB 86 300SDL Trap Oxidizer had a recall issued in 1988 and I only heard of it in 2005. I went to a MB dealer, they checked my car VIN and said yes, you are eligible for free repair, but we don't have the parts, we have to specially order, can we call you when parts are ready? A week later, they called and changed it for free. I knew MB lost couple thousands for that as it's a big chunk of metal connected to engine exaust area.
