So when you turned the key, you could hear the starter running, right? If that is the case, probably there is nothing wrong with the starter. However, you also mentioned that you heard the starter running, then stopped. What exactly you meant by that? You stopped it or it stopped itself?

Here are my guesses on what could be the cause when it is not a starter problem (many people has said a lot about the starter and they have some good suggestions) and it is just my 2 cents:

1) somehow you flooded your car, which could explain why AAA guy could start the car while doing exactly the same thing a moment later. To test this: next time when this problem happens again, floor your gas panel when you try to start your car. Please note that quite often, people have a 'not so good' habit: when they start the car, they push the gas panel hard. When car refuses to start, they push it even harder. Normal procedure is not to push the gas panel, or push it just a little bit when starting. OK, this is not your case and it doesn't help,

2) some bad connection problem for the chip in your distributor which is temperature depended. When it is hot, connection is bad, and when it cools off, it is better. Also once it is connected, it keeps connected. To test this, when this problem happens again, use a timing gun to check if there is any sparks. If not, you need to check from distributor up. OK, it is not your case and we do have the sparks,

3) some kind of strange block in your fuel filter which is temp dependent. You don't need to wait or test. Just buy a fuel injector cleaner (get a more expensive one if I were you this time) and add it to the gas tomorrow. If still won't help,

4) at least I run out of ideas :-). I know even if you send the car to a shop, they might have a hard time to find it out as well.

Good luck.
