You can shift N D any time you want. It won't destroy the tranny, just cause a little bit of extra wear. Shifting into N at a stop light is usually not worth the trouble.

You can go D -> 3 to get some extra power for passing, as well as engine-braking. The computer will always prevent you from over-revving the engine.

The only unsafe thing to do on an auto tranny is shifting into R or P while moving forward.
