It is a well-known fact that design is desired. Desired sexually, sensually, pragmatically, emotionally, whatever you choose, is a factor that represents your needs. Based on the dictionary’s definition, desire is a longing or craving for something that brings satisfaction or enjoyment, a sexual appetite or urge. An appetite for extreme pleasure and need, that only increases and becomes more demanding throughout time. We are designed to desire.

In 1986, the world of books went crazy over the publication of ‘Objects of Desire’, a book by Adrian Forty, listing the most desirable design items from 1750. 26 years on, we have now gone even crazier, in a completely different way, about a new iconic publication called DESIGN BEHIND DESIRE (ISBN 978-0-9830-8315-3) published by Farameh Media, curated by Lisa Z. Morgan under the creative direction of Susanne Schaal.Lisa Z. Morgan, the founder of Strumpet & Pink, the luxurious handmade lingerie company,  is an expert on how to excite us till our needs our met. Erotic, sexual, beauty and romance are some of the words that describe this art piece. But why describe something that is so powerfully understood by its cover. It’s all about judgment here, with eloquence, eroticism and symbolism; it is waiting to be penetrated into a world of the many pleasures of design.

In this book, the strongest desire is illustrated in many different ways; the desire being that of SEX.  This is the strongest form of need, hence if we were to say Sex behind design, Sex = dynamism, power, control, wealth, lust, liberation, freedom, breaking boundaries etc. All these features are what design is all about or what it wants to be. It is very hard to talk about the one without the existence of the other. Browsing through the photographs page after page moving from elements of the erotic bohemian to soft romantic porn, you grasp the importance of sensuality in design. 

Sex objects aimed for pleasure which can easily be worn as jewelry, garments with lace & exquisite knitting details and sexual toy chests presented as unique furniture pieces for your living room, are just some examples of the unique pieces that have undergone the long and detailed process of design. This presentation has made us pay notice to the expectations and needs of every single individual that knows how to give or receive pleasure.
