The U.S. trade representative, Katherine Tai, expressed that, in relation to China failing to fulfil the promises made in the first phase of trade deal between the two nations, the U.S. seeks to have a candid discussion with the Chinese vice premier Liu He in the coming few days. Tai said she will strive to defend the economic interests of the U.S. and take necessary measures to protect the U.S. from the damage induced by unfair competition.

Also, the U.S. will resume a targeted approval process to impose punitive tariffs on certain Chinese products, in order to stimulate the recovery of the U.S. industry, Tai revealed. Depending on the situation, the U.S. may also initiate 301 investigation, which may lead to new tariff measures being imposed on China, the trade chief added.
