Forget “Russia collusion.” What matters to Trump now is keeping the only thing he’s got going for him—a strong economy with record low unemployment. His Federal Reserve is working at cross purposes.

And even though the market was expecting a rate hike on Wednesday in the overnight lending rate to 2.25%, investors will spend much of Thursday morning chewing over whether or not the Fed will really, seriously hike twice in 2019 and again in 2020.  Jerome Powell said two is more likely than three. But that wasn’t dovish enough for the market, a market that—for better or worse—has become hooked on near-zero interest rates.

The S&P 500 tumbled to a 15-month low after Powell spoke yesterday. It’s become a tradition with him. Powell speaks, markets crash.
