The title of the meeting "Human Genome Editing Summit" is encouraging behaviors like such by Jiankui He. Science today is no longer for the pure pursuit of knowledge and information but all about one-upsmanship! If not He, it would have been someone else, but surely there would have been someone else. If the mindset of the entire community is to see who gets the closest to the edge, someday, someone will for sure go over it just to see. This behavior is not all that different from companies testing for people's TeloYears or Cellular Age, or telling people that they are at risk for such and such hereditary disorders with no validated associative data to back it up. Our tolerance of commercial behaviors like such, or even support (TeloYears/Cellular Age claims to have the backings of a Nobel Laureate), gave He the idea that he can exploit ignorant consumers (the parents of the GM babies) for his one-upsmanship at the Summit! He/he is there, alright, but can anyone really shake off our collective responsibilities!
