We used to have, on the average:

2 major courses, 4hr each
1 language course, 3hr.
2 minor courses, 2hr each.
lab, 3hr.

total: 18hr/wk

times: 52*9/12*4*18=2808.

Your estimate for US classes is also wrong. The common sense number is 120 hours times 14 weeks =1680.
