Eleanor Roosevelt remembered that Madame “never said a word, but the beautiful, small hand came up very quietly and slid across her throat - a most expressive gesture.”(55) Such a gesture surely began Eleanor Roosevelt’s questioning of her initial beliefs about Madame Chiang Kai-shek.
