I understand Elian's situation and conern too. After living aboard independently for many years, some times it is hard to communicate with our own parents in addition to the nature generation gap between us. Living under the same roof for several months is not easy for people with different mentality. My parents are both teachers like your mom and some times they drive me crazy because they comment on everything, always intend to criticize or give out "suggestions". I sure appreciate they effort helping us and I try to remind myself often about it too.
Btw, I thought American do call their parents or inlaws "extended family" outside their own core family. Maybe I am wrong? Anyone can clear this?
