OAKLEY -- A 41-year-old man died Monday after he was shot Sunday by a friend's estranged hu*****and, who had been watching her home from outside before opening fire, police said.
Police were called to a home on Carol Lee Lane about 7:50 a.m. after the 40-year-old woman living there reported that her hu*****and -- from whom she was separated -- had just shot the victim, said police Chief Bani Kollo.
Kollo said it appears that the suspected shooter, 39-year-old Eric Scott Landry, of Brentwood, had been watching the home he once shared with his wife from open fields surrounding the property.
Using a revolver, he shot the victim, an Oakley resident, as he emerged from the home into the backyard, striking him in the head, Kollo said.
Officers arrived and immediately spoke with Landry, first by phone, then by talking through the front door, all with his wife inside.
Meanwhile, other officers and paramedics helped get the injured man out of the backyard and into a medical helicopter, which took him to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
Landry barricaded himself in the home and held off officers for about an hour before he was coaxed into surrendering peacefully, Kollo said. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and false imprisonment and booked into County Jail in Martinez, where he is being held without bail.
The precise motive was still being determined by investigators and the victim was known by both the

suspect and his estranged wife.
"With the initial information we have, this all centered around a domestic situation," Kollo said.
