New series. Unaccompanied by Chinese authorities for the first time, BBC cameras offer an insight into the daily lives of Tibetans and reveal the significance of Buddhism within society. In the opening episode, the Panchen Lama, the highest-ranking monk living in the country, pays a visit to a local monastery and a young farmer's wife is rushed into hospital due to complications with her pregnancy.

It is autumn and harvest time in southern Tibet, Dundan worries about his crops being flattened by hailstones now that his brother Tseden, the local shaman, can no longer protect the fields with his spells since the local government has installed guns to disperse the clouds and this has put Tseden out of a job. In the nearby town of Gyantse, Rincheu, a local builder, struggles to find workers during the harvest to complete his first government commission, while in the monastery, the monks recover from a visit by the highest ranking Buddhist Lama in Tibet. Meanwhile, Tseden helps a family to arrange their daughters wedding, but the bride is unaware she has to marry her hu*****and's brother too.

In town, Lhakpa, a local rickshaw driver struggles to earn money as winter approaches. He embarks on a scheme to buy and sell puppies... but with disastrous consequences. Meanwhile, his 5-year old nephew Ozer is rushed into hospital with a life-threatening heart condition, which only plunges the family further into debt. Jianzang, a local hotel owner, gets involved in a court case, which has a surprising outcome. And in Tangmai village, the local doctor cannot cure her crippling stomach pains; Lhamo worries they result from bad khama in a previous life and she seeks a solution in her Buddhist faith. But as New Year arrives, everyone puts their worries behind them as they celebrate fifteen riotous days of their New Year holiday.

It is mid-winter in southern Tibet, where temperatures regularly fall 20 degrees below freezing. In the Pel Kor monastery in Gyantse, the director Choephel discovers that some irreplaceable statutes have been
stolen and he suspects it is an inside job. But the theft gives the local Communist Party an excuse to put in a government 'work team' to weed out the monks who they think are behaving badly. Lhakpa, a rickshaw driver in town, heads north in search of a lucrative job on a building site, but he gets more than he bargained for. And Butri, a life-long communist party worker, gets an unpleasant surprise as she approaches her retirement.

For 12 months, a television crew has followed a handful of ordinary Tibetan people living in and around Gyantse, Tibet's third largest town. Tibet is changing quickly and the last episode of the series follows three monks at the Pel Kor monastery whose stories highlight these changes. Tsultrim is the deputy head lama: he has to juggle running the monastery with complying with myriad government restrictions. Tsephun is the youngest monk at the Pel Kor monastery. He was 12 when he became a novice; now 15, he lives and works with his master, Dondrup, a 77-year-old curmudgeonly lama. They share a single room in the monastery: it is a close relationship, but not an easy one. Tsephun helps his master with the day-to-day jobs of cleaning and tidying. In return, Dondrup teaches Tsephun the sutras (a scriptural narrative, especially a text traditionally regarded as a discourse of the Buddha) and scriptures – an essential part of becoming a monk.
During the filming of A Year In Tibet, Tsephun changes from being a co-operative and caring little boy to a hormonally charged rebellious teenager. His relationship with Dondrup deteriorates so badly that Dondrup can cope no longer and he asks Tsultrim to expel Tsephun. For Tsephun and his family, it would be the ultimate disgrace.
