It is a stripped down computer anyway. The incremental convenience it brings does not warrant the significant limitations on the input and output format it comes with. Nothing's more annoying when you sit down and want to watch something and, dah, it doesn't play and there's very little if anything you can do about it.
A $300 PC with Vista Media Center, Windows Media Player, and the free ffdshow, Hali Splitter, Real Alternative, will let you play almost anything and output to almost anything. It's somewhat high maintenance but you also have the unlimited flexibility to fix/add new things.
If you bother to use such a thing, a PC is a better option
