Please Help: looking for travel advice to Istanbul

Mom and I are planning a two weeks trip in Istanbul this May, is it safe for two women to travel on one's own there?

Any tips are welcome. I have booked the air, and in the process of finding lodging. Any suggestions on lodging and good guide books?
