Liu and Deng really belived what they said and thought at that time. Nothing would go wrong. Deng died in 1996 and we do not know what he thought when he died.
Liu didn't live to witness the "glorious" results of Deng's policy. But Liu's widow Wang Quangmei did. I do not want to speculate the reason Wang invited Mao's daughters to dinner before she died. Could Wang be implying "Well after all, Chairman, you may not be totally wrong."
