What Chen did during 7.30 incident deserved to be executed and died 10 times. 7.30 was indeed nearly an armed rebellion against Mao & Zhou. Chen arguably was not directly involved. Chen was guilty at least for not avoiding/stopping the incident. Mao & Zhou yet still protected Chen (but was severely criticized) for whatever reason. Chen was exonerated and rehabilitated in 1972 and became a deputy commander of Foochow Military Region (?).
