About 200 people gathered this morning at San Francisco's Union Square to protest Wednesday's Olympic Torch relay in the city.
San Francisco is the only North American stop in the global torch celebration that precedes the Olympics' Aug. 8 opening in Beijing. But demonstrators in the United States and other countries are urging the world to boycott the summer games to punish China for its human-rights record, including the reputed torture of followers of Falun Gong, a spiritual practice based on meditation and exercise.
Prominent figures, including French President Nicolas Sarkozy and a number of Hollywood celebrities, have criticized the country for its treatment of Tibet and its close ties with the Sudanese government in light of mass killing and dislocation in Darfur.
Today's demonstration, dubbed the "Human Rights Torch" relay, is part of an international campaign organized by a Falun Gong advocacy group. On Tuesday, the Tibetan Freedom Torch will travel through San Francisco on its way to Los Angeles.
Today's event, which attracted Japanese drummers, people carrying anti-China signs and politicians, included a rally and panel discussion. People came from as far away as Arizona to voice their concerns.
Bin Li, a 34-year-old devotee of Falun Gong, traveled on a bus from Los Angeles. She was scheduled to speak to the crowd about the atrocities she says she suffered at the hands of China's communist government.
She said she was jailed three times, hospitalized in a mental institution and forced-fed drugs that made her lose her memory because of her spiritual practices. Li said she was also held prisoner in a labor camp, where she was tortured with electrical batons.
"We're trying to draw the international community's attention to the human rights abuses in China," she said during the protest. "We need people's help to stop the persecution."
San Francisco Supervisor Chris Daly took the stage, condemning both President Bush and Mayor Gavin Newsom for not speaking out. Both have said that politics have no place in the Olympics, an ancient competition of athletics.
"The Human Rights Torch embodies San Francisco values," said Daly, adding that it is "our responsibility when an injustice is exposed to speak out against it and demand a better world for all of us to live in."
Chinese officials have denounced critics' accusations of cruelty and persecution, saying that Falun Gong followers are nothing more than fomenters of political unrest who are trying to overthrow their government.
The Board of Supervisors passed a resolution censuring China for its recent crackdown on Tibet and calling on the mayor to speak out. Newsom has not yet decided whether he'll sign the resolution.
