those small DC doesn't offer as much control vs. dSLR

that's one of the main difference. The other is the CCD (or CMOS, whatever is being used) size. Small CCD has much higher noise. It's just the nature of it.

That being said, the G series are good compact DCs. When G2 came out I actually was thinking about getting one.
