The Glass Bridge Construction of the Skywalk started in March '04 and was supposed to be finished by the end December 2006. As of now, it is scheduled to open to the public in March 2007 as part of a new resort on the reservation.
It juts out about 70 feet into the canyon, 4000 ft above the Colorado River. It will accommodate 120 people comfortably (How comfortable would YOU be?). It is built with more than a million pounds of steel beams and includes dampeners that minimize the structure's vibration. It is designed to hold 72 million pounds, withstand an 8.0 magnitude earthquake 50 miles away, and withstand winds in excess of 100 mph. It has a glass bottom and sides...four inches thick.
Just to give you nice comparison about how high it will be constructed - The highest building of the world right now is 1627 ft high and this skyway is structured at about 4000 ft high from the ground level.
