Second Week of October
Leaf peeping season is well underway in west Central Illinois with the dogwood, sassafras and sumac trees turning brilliant shades of gold and scarlet. The area’s sweetgum trees are boasting a palate of plum and crimson, while the hickories, walnuts and oaks are producing abundant golden hues.
In Northern Illinois, the ivy has turned to fiery shades of crimson and amber, but the Virginia creeper, hackberry, elm and ash are still showing only hints of yellow. Northern Illinois will need some cooler nights and a few rain showers before the colors start bursting, but for now the maple tree canopies are speckled with red and amber hues.
