You can completely and totally disregard Chang Jung's book which had been discredited by many serious China scholars and historians. As to Li's book, it is half truth mixed with fictions. We don't know which is which until we have read the book in its original Chinese manu.
As to 中南海放鞭炮, there is another saying that Mao wanted the young people around him to celebrate the spring festival in an otherweise very sad New Year. I personally do not believe that Mao did it to celebrate Zhou's death. Mao was too sophisticated and intelligent to do something so obvious and naive.
