Question about EAD - Please advise

I have two questions need need help:

1) What is the EAD really for? Shall I need to apply for EAD if I don't intend to change job during my I485 pending period, which filed at beiginning of July this year.

2) My wife and child got their EAD today, where and how they can apply social security number?
