Six dead in 24 hours on Victorian roads
Saturday Oct 6 10:43 AEST
Victoria has endured a shocking 24 hours on the road with six people dead in three separate accidents.

On Friday night three young people died in a head-on crash in the state's south-east while two people died early Saturday in a fatal single car accident on Melbourne's Eastern Freeway.

A motorcyclist also died on Friday when his bike left the road and hit several trees at Lake Tyers, in the state's south east.

In Saturday's accident on the freeway, police said two men died when their car, travelling outbound, left the road on the Eastern Freeway at 4.15am (AEST) at North Balwyn.

Their deaths took the state's road toll to 237, 10 fewer than the same time last year.

The fatal accident on Melbourne's Eastern Freeway was believed to have occurred when the car, a Toyota Corolla, lost control and hit a tree after mounting an embankment, police said.

The driver, a 22-year-old man from Box Hill North, in Melbourne's east, and a back-seat passenger, a 25-year-old man from Malvern East, in Melbourne's east, died at the scene.

A young man, who was the front-seat passenger, was in a stable condition in hospital.

On Friday night at around 7pm (AEST) three young people died and a fourth was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition after a head-on crash Princess Highway, near the Yarragon-Shady Creek Road intersection, at Yarragon, 120km south-east of Melbourne.

Police said all four lived locally.

Killed in the crash was the 18-year-old female driver from Warragul, her front seat passenger, a 19-year-old male from Nilma, and a back seat 21-year-old year male passenger from Darnum.

The male driver and only occupant of the other car, a Toyota Landcruiser, was not injured.

Elsewhere on Victorian roads, a 28-year-old motorcyclist was killed at Lake Tyres, in the state's south-east.

Police believe the dead biker had been lying at the side of the Lake Tyers Beach Road for some time after his 1995 Kawasaki model bike left the road and collided with several trees sometime on Friday.

Police spokeswoman Carla Dennis said the dead man has been identified as a 28-year-old from Eagle Point in East Gippsland.
