You don't necessarily need a big bulky SLR digital camera to be able to control aperture. Some mid level digital camera models, such as Ah Shan's Cannon S2 (the new model is S3), allow full manual and aperture priority settings and you can shoot decent pictures with them. S3 also has a nice 12X zoom. Olympus and Nikon both have similar models. I think these would be good learning models if you are learning.
