i.e. depth of field. Your camera has to have a full manual mode (usually marked as M) for you to be able to control aperture. Some cameras also have an aperture proiority setting that allows you to set the aperture you want and the camera adjusts the exposure speed accordingly.

You don't necessarily need a big bulky SLR digital camera to be able to control aperture. Some mid level digital camera models, such as Ah Shan's Cannon S2 (the new model is S3), allow full manual and aperture priority settings and you can shoot decent pictures with them. S3 also has a nice 12X zoom. Olympus and Nikon both have similar models. I think these would be good learning models if you are learning.
