I am responsible to make sure we are following the correct routing, AND, if the reality does not allow us to follow the original planned route, I would look up the map quickly to find the alternate route. This would happen a lot if we are driving in cities and found ourselves in a traffic jam.

In general, both of us have looked at the area and the routes AHEAD of the driving and have an idea of the route to be taken, before we set off.
