And the info of elevation, mountain passes, are very important, as demonstrated in James Kim's case.
The elevation info can tell you what kind of weather you might expect, before the mountain pass and after it.
Last Sept when we docked at Skagway, Alaska, it was pouring down. We had reserved a car with Avis and intended to drive to Whitehorse, Canada. Weighing whether we should go with the original plan or stay put - we consulted the map - it showed there were 2 mountain passes towards Canadian border - once you get over it, the elevation would come down quite a lot. We thought the mountains would block some of the moisture on the West side of the mountain and weather should improve soon after Canadian border. It proved our guestimate was right on target. Weather cannot get much worse climbing up the mountain pass with extremely poor visibility (may be like 10 yards). Once we were on the other side of the pass and started to descend, weather improved dramatically. We had SUNSHINE all the way to Whitehorse! The first and the last Sunshine during the full 6 days of this 7 days cruise!
BTW, I strongly recommend this excursion - we found an Avis code to reduce the rental car rate (mid-size) from $75 to $40 and had a great 7 hours excursion. The scenery along the drive was extraordinary. It was Fall, so the ashpens all turned golden. There were streams and lakes along the bulk portion of the highway. Saw the world's smallest High Desert. Encountered a Caribou walking accross the hwy. Walked down to Yukon River at Whitehorse. It was the highlight of our cruise.
