You may not know that, you can also have a stopover (and an openjaw of course) anywhere in Mainland US AND Peurto Rico!
The stopover does not need to be on a logical route - i.e. you can live in WA or CA, fly to NYC as your stopover, then fly to Hawaii as your destination, then fly back home. Or, you fly to Hawaii as your destination, then from Hawaii fly to NYC as your stopover, then fly home - this is the 35K award. There is another "unpublished" 30K award for originating from CA - that does not allow a stopover.
However, the beauty is you can have the stopover set at San Juan, Peurto Rico.
I at one time had this crazy itinerary booked but never ticketed to travel - MIA/SJU/ORD/OGG/MIA - where SJU (San Juan at Peurto Rico) was the stopover, and OGG (Kahului Airport at Maui) was the destination.
I accidentally discovered this when I talked to AAdvantage agent about what stopovers were allowed with the 35K award, and she said anywhere in Mainland US AND Peurto Rico! My jaw dropped when I heard this. :)
