Are you moving with lots of stuff/people and have to drive the distance? If so, I-80 distance wise would be the shortest. If you are driving in late fall/winter, be prepared for and aware of the weather. I-80 crosses the sierra mountains in CA/NV for example and snow chains may be required in winter. Of course, mid-west could have snow storms too.
If you are moving without lots of stuff/people, I'd say fly may be a better bet, after factoring in the lodging, high gas price, mileage and wear on the car and your family, and time and the risks being on the road for long distance.
If you are sight-seeing, really doesn't make sense to drive the route this time of the year, especially dragging a 3 year old. For one thing, how can you make sure the 3 year old doesn't get sick while on the road?
Just my opinion
