especially since this apparently is your first visit. If you are there as a tourist, there are definitely better times of the year. Tidal wave glaciers are the "must see" in Alaska and it will be hard to find a tour company that is open to take you out on a boat to see them. Even if they do take you out, it would be too cold to be on water.
I have been to Alaska at least 5 times and been there twice in winter. Not as bad as people perceive but if this is your first time to Alaska as a tourist, I don't think winter is a good time since the days are so much shorter. I would go to weather.com and find out their sunset and sunrise time.
You do have a better chance to see Mt Mckinley in winter.
