When you book with the hotel, normally you dont need to prepay and you can cancel without hassle.
With Expedia, many times you need to prepay and no cancellation.
On our May trip, Expedia wanted $89 for our room, the hotel wanted $69, and fully cancellable. I actually kept a "rotating" booking for almost 2 months to avoid paying a deposit till we were already in Hawaii. The hotel wanted you to pay a one-night deposit to secure your reservation, but you can choose NOT to pay online, and to call 1-800 to pay. Hotel give 10 days for you to do that. At the end of each 10 day period I checked the availability - the availability was always there, so I cancelled the existing booking and rebooked - thus extended the life of the reservation by another 10 days. I had to do that as we were meeting our friends at Honolulu and they wanted to stay with us in the same hotel. But this couple was on their 6 weeks trip in U.S. (they live in Australia) and although our rendez-vous at Honolulu was supposedly a no-change deal (our last day and their transit day from SFO to SYD), I did not want to tie us down until last minute that there would be absolute no change.
With Expedia, you would not be able to do that, not to mention the price is actually $20 cheaper when booking direct with hotel.
