I'd stay in Jackson for day 1 & 2 at least

because:
1. Too much driving back and forth, especially for the 2. More lodging options in Jackson town than inside Yellowstone
3. More dining options in Jackson town.
4. Jackson town itself is an interesting little western town and you will have something to do in the evenings.
