Kauai is rustic - may be the "true" Hawaii - but Maui beaches are far better. Actually Oahu has the best beaches among the whole Hawaiian Island Chain, but Maui is more famous.
I would stay at Wailea - it has the best beaches, and very upscale. April is still considered High Season so lodging would be more expensive. You might be better off just stay on ONE island instead of rushing. You can look for condo rental which should save you 30% cost than a hotel room, with much more space and you can cook simple meals.
We are going in May for 9 days, 5 days Maui and 4 days Oahu. This is our 3rd time to Hawai. We already booked a condo for the 5 days, total cost is $530 - rents, cleaning fee (7 day stay usually dont need to pay cleaning fee) and the 11% tax. That is a low season rate and is at Kihei. Wailea costs 30% higher. High Season costs 50% or more higher.
Lodging in Oahu is slightly cheaper than Maui.
