generally speaking, if you hold MC Plantinum, or Visa Signature, both have very decent rental car insurance coverage. You can find the details in the documents come with your card.
Your own car insurance is the primary and the card company's secondary. However, if you only have liability on your own car insurance policy, (no comprehensive) then the card company's becomes primary.
We had a hail storm damage in Yellowstone NP last Sept. The repair bill was $2,282, Loss of Revenues was $342 (car in repair so the rental company cannot rent it) and Administration fee was $150. MC paid the repair bill without any question after they received the documentation. They refused to pay the Loss of Renues, claiming the supporting documents were not appropriate, and the program does not cover Admin Fee.
We negotiated with rental car (Thrifty) for the latter 2 items and brought the total balance down to $322 and paid them on the phone via credit card.
We knew we were gauged a little bit here, but we also felt that given the location (Jacksonhole, WY) and the time of the year, it was entirely possible the car was out of commission for a week and the rental company did lose revenues on that week - probably about $250. (When we rented, Thrifty has run out of car.) Since MC already paid the large bill of $2282, we decided not to argue for the balance.
From my research, while the card policy covers Loss of Revenues - usually it is very difficult to prove as it requires the Fleet Utilization Log and the rental car companies simply wont provide the details and the Card company simply wont pay. Visa Signature covers Admin Fee as well.
There are procedures to follow and you need to follow up closely once you file the claim. This is a first time for us, and we learn a lot from the whole process.
By the way, we videotaped the damages with narrative. We made a DVD of the clip and mailed it together with all the paperworks to MC - they dont need any more evidence from us. But it took a long time to get Thrifty and MC communicate to each other and the Repair Estimate to be sent ...
But I can testify, the credit card company insurance WORKS !
