there is always hope. Don't give up so easily. You know it's not something most people can say, that they have their hobby as job. My recommendation, don't focus too much on Chinese bosses in research area, simply because they are normally not that established in the fields, so lacking of funding is their general problem, which might lead to all kinds of problems.
