Have you looked at your map yet ? There are few routes you can get off Hwy 1 (to 101) once you get on - sometimes it pays to backtrack if you only want to see a certain section and do not intend to drive the whole route up.
I-5 of course is the most direct and fastest route between LA and SF. 101 is a good alternative, 2 more hours drive but with some very nice scenaries on the way. Hwy 1 easilly adds 5 to 7 hours on what is needed for I-5. It is great for family vacation which would stop on the way, camping, for example. But if your goal is to get from LA to SF, then 101 might be a compromise.
