Two bodies believed to be a mother and son reported as missing last week after leaving Yosemite Valley on their way to Las Vegas were found yesterday.
The bodies, believed to be Xiaodong Yuan, 34, of Atlanta, and his 60-year-old mother, Zhaohui Wang, who was visiting from China, were found by a U.S. Forest Service ranger yesterday afternoon near their car, on Highway 120 east of Tioga Pass, said Scott Gediman, a Yosemite National Park ranger.
But the Mono County Coroner's Office had not confirmed the victims' identities and the cause of death was not immediately revealed. The coroner's office was to issue a statement about the bodies later today.
Yuan and Wang had spent two nights in a cabin at Curry Village, in Yosemite Valley, before checking out last Friday, Sept. 23.
A 2006 Ford Taurus with Nevada license plates matching the description of the car rented by the mother and son was found near the bodies, said Yosemite spokeswoman Adrienne Freeman.
Park rangers said the two had planned to drive back to Las Vegas after stopping at Death Valley National Park. Their intended route of travel was to drive east on Tioga Road, also known as Highway 120, to U.S. Highway 395, where they would then drive south.
A search began throughout the region last weekend, after family members notified law enforcement officers that the pair was missing.
This week, Yosemite crews searched all park roads, parking areas and campgrounds, in addition to steep banks and roadside ravines.
The bodies were found just a few miles east of the park's Tioga Pass entrance gate.
