Very bad area and not close to China town.
You do not need a car to go around in San Francisco. The public transit system is very very good.
When seleting hotel, aviod place along Market Street, and anything with numbered "St", such as 18th St, 22nd St. They are in bad area. Also do not confuse numbered St with numbered Ave. Numbered Ave are is not bad, such as 5th Ave, 30th Ave.
I suggest you stay around Fishman's Warf area. It is a tourist area and very safe and a lot to see around the corner. The hotel might be $20-$30 more expensive but definitely worth it, as you only stay in the City for a few days.
If you drive to SF and need parking, I suggest you do not stay within San Francisco. Stay somewhere between the airport and the City on El Camino Real. Try the towns Daily City and San Bruno. There are many nice motels on El Camino Real and much cheaper than those in the City.
