Do not try do it in one day, like many people did on a tour bus. One day in Grand Canyon is minimum, 2-3 day is appropriate. Lodge in park is expensive and you had better book right now. Otherwise, living in Flagstaff in much more reasonablly priced. With coupon, you can find around $30-40 motel.

I remember take HW40 from Vagas to Flagstaff then ... Sorry, can't remember
