Your are right that it is because of Taiwanese themseleves. Chen Sui Bian understand all too well how majority of Taiwanese are like and use this weakness to his advantage but his dirty politics is even more than US's dirty politics during election years. I've seen too many TV about these things therefore 50% Americans don't care who is president or not. The same probably happening in Taiwan now after this election.
