基督教is a religion and so is an ideal. 基督徒 are real people and so are not perfect. In the real life, the way one acts is largely based on the way he is brought up, and so it is not realistic to expect him to become a "brand-new" man after converted to a 基督徒. So does the Chinese-Christian community.

Sorry, I didn't read your novel and don't know much about the Chinese-Christian community either even though I am a converted Christian myself. But I do believe that there are more nice people than mean ones in the Christian community(Chinese or not), just like there are more nice people in the non-believers' world.
